Bar collapse in northern Spain leaves 12 people injured

Around 50 people were inside the La Rioja bar when the building collapsed early Saturday, prompting a rescue operation.

Spain: Twelve people were taken to hospital with injuries on Saturday after a bar collapsed in La Rioja in northern Spain, the Spanish Guardia Civil said.

The bar in San Vicente de la Sonsierra collapsed at about 5.25 a.m. (0325 GMT), when around 50 people were inside, police said.

Emergency services rescued people from the rubble of the destroyed building. Firefighters were checking the site to determine whether anyone else remained trapped.

Survivors told authorities that the floor of the bar collapsed, followed by the ceiling.

Police have launched an investigation into the cause of the collapse.
